Brian Gay (66-67-62-195) birdied five of his final six holes on Saturday en route to a third round 62. The bogey-free, 8-under par round would have tied the course record had Roland Thatcher (71-73-61-205) not broken the mark earlier in the day. Gay will carry a five stroke lead over Steve Marino (67-69-64-200) going into Sunday’s final round. Mexico’s Esteban Toledo (70-69-63-202) is seven back.

With many players scrambling to make par, first round leader John Merrick (68) carded his second bogey-free round to remain atop the leaderboard at 8-under par. Veteran Brian Gay (67) is one stroke back followed by Australian Davis Lutteras (69) at 6-under.
Merrick keeps Mayakoba lead, but Nick Price moves into contention.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — John Daly and Greg Norman were garnering more attention for their first-round performances at the PGA TOUR’s Mayakoba Golf Classic.
In the afternoon, the two-time major champion Daly was 5-under-par at one point and finished with a 66, while El Camaleón course architect Norman was 4-under-par through 10 holes before a double-bogey on the par-3 seventh hole derailed his round. He finished at even-par 70.
But JOHN MERRICK quietly took the lead by one shot over three players, dropped six birdies en route to a bogey-free, 6-under 64 in the first round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Merrick holds a one stroke clubhouse lead over Larry Mize, Robert Damron, David Lutteras and Kenneth Ferrie.
